Tijuana murders rise 47% in 2013

Murders in Tijuana rose 47% in 2013, Frontera newspaper reported. They rose from 362 in 2012 to 537 in 2013; many of the deaths were attributed to disputes over drug-dealing territory.

In earlier years when Tijuana's death toll was high, many of the deaths were attributable to disputes over who would control the plaza of Tijuana to move drugs into the United States.

Murders in Mexicali, Rosarito and Tecate remained fairly constant, while there was a drop from 64 violent deaths in Ensenada in 2012 to 47 in 2013. As a result of Tijuana's toll, the state of Baja California's numbers rose from 640 in 2012 to 796 in 2013.
There were roughly 1,370 murders during Mayor Carlos Bustamante's three-year, 2010-2013 term, which ended Dec. 1, a major drop from the roughly 2,325 during the 2007-2010 term of Mayor Jorge Ramos. Five deaths greeted new Mayor Jorge Astiazarán upon his taking office, and there were 48 for the month, the second-highest total of the year.  Story, Frontera (PDF).

Last month, U-T San Diego's Sandra Dibble took a look at the alarming increase in Tijuana violence: "Rise in Tijuana homicides raises concerns."
