2 teens detained in kidnapping of 16-year-old whose finger was cut off

     Two teenagers were detained in Tijuana in the kidnapping of a 16-year-old whose finger was cut off as part of a ransom attempt. Brandon David Sánchez Gordillo, 18 y and Christian Santos Trujillo, 19, who took preparatory courses in the fall at the Tijuana Technological Institute, were detained by city police in the Maclovio Rojas neighborhood along with the bleeding 16-year-old, Frontera reported. The paper said Sánchez Gordillo called himself a drug trafficker and kidnapper on his Facebook page and said he told police he contacted the victim through Facebook. Story, Frontera.

Vehicle robberies grew 38% during Calderón's term

      Vehicle robberies jumped 38% during President Felipe Calderón's recently completed six-year term, a Mexican insurance associated says. The group said 419,136 vehicles were stolen from 2007-2012. It said 40% were recovered, a recovery rate nearly 46% higher than during President Vicente Fox's term.
     Vehicle thefts did drop 11.7% in 2012 compared with 2011, with 73,878 vehicles taken in 2012 and 83,676 in 2011. Story in Frontera (PDF).

Violence continues apace in Mexico

       Violence continued apace in Mexico, as seen on just one page of Frontera newspaper on Wednesday (PDF).
      The bodies of three men who worked for the federal Communications and Transportation Ministry who had been kidnapped near Gómez Palacio, Durango were found.
      Three bodies were found dead in Chalco, bringing the three-day death toll in the Mexico state municipality to 16. The bodies showed signs of torture.
      Three bags containing the remains of a person were found in the north of Monterrey in Nuevo León state.
        Five alleged Zetas linked to 22 killings were arrested in Nuevo León state. One of the alleged Zetas is former San Nicolás policeman Daniel "El Chico" Pulido
Gloria, 27. The other four detained were Mario Alberto
"El Flaco" Dávila Ontiveros, 19 años, José Luis "El Mudo" Gómez Salas, 19, Joana Elizabeth Villalobos Herrera, 24, and Sergio Smith Ramírez Román, 27. They were reported to have confessed to killing 22 members of a rival drug-peddling organization. Seized during the arrests were one AR-15 and four AK-47 rifles and plastic bags containing 50 cocaine doses and 36 marijuana doses.
        In Chihuahua city, the capital of Chihuahua state, a former head of the Institutional Revolutionary Party's youth wing was detained along with a man found in possession of a fragmentation grenade, a gun and drugs.

635 kilos of pot found on Todos Santos island

      The Mexican military found 635 kilos of marijuana wrapped in 88 packages on Isla Todos Santos. Two people, including a minor, were detained. Also seized was a .45-caliber weapon. Story, El Mexicano (PDF).

3 security guards suspected in slaying of man killed on 8th Street off Avenida Revolución in Tijuana around midday Sunday

     Three security guards were arrested under suspicion of killing a man on 8th Street off Avenida Revolución in Tijuana around midday Sunday.
     The three apparently had been drinking in a bar with the shooting victim, Carlo Arturo Ochoa, 28, when they had words. The three allegedly chased after Ochoa in a vehicle; Ochoa was shot in front of the Red Bull bar, Frontera reported.
       Detained were Nicolás Uriel Solórzano Martínez, 27, whom Frontera identified as the shooter, Rodolfo Becerra Cortinas, 39, and José de Jesús Leal Gallardo, 33.

10 slayings, including one of a policeman, and 25 vehicle thefts in Tijuana for week

       Frontera newspaper reported that there were 10 violent deaths during the past week in Tijuana, including the slaying of a policeman.
