14 bodies left in vehicle at gas station in San Luis Potosí; many others killed elsewhere

Fourteen bodies were left in a vehicle at a gas station in San Luis Potosí state. Media said it was the first time bodies had been such in a way in state, similar to the way bodies have been dumped in Veracruz and Jalisco. Story in Frontera (PDF).

Five arrested for drug peddling, killing in Mexicali; daughter allegedly killed own father

Five people were arrested in Mexicali for drug dealing and in the death of Juan Manuel Rentería Montoya. The Sinaloa native was reportedly kidnapped July 10 by people accusing him of having stolen 20 pounds of crystal meth. Authorities said he was taken to a home in the ejido Villa Zapata, and that a ransom was paid for his release. Nevertheless, he was killed July 12, and his body was found July 26 in the desert northeast of the ejido Villa Zapata, authorities told Frontera newspaper. Rentería's wife said their daughter was resentful of him for not having shared in the proceeds of the sale of the house and because of the missing meth. Arrested were the daughter, Gloria Alicia Rentería López, 23; her husband, Francisco Rodríguez Romo, 25; Tomás "El Pitbull" or "El Chato" Zamudio Guzmán, 25; Héctor "El Chilili" Luna Bolaños, 28; and Marco Antonio "El Tony" Valdez Magaña. Illegal weapons seized in Tijuana; ex-policeman detained

State police raided a home in the Colinas de Agua Caliente neighborhood of Tijuana, seizing nine rifles, including R-15s, a grenade launcher, 10 handguns and gun magazines and ammunition. Former city policeman Sergio Heriberto Fernández Dueñas was detained; he was among a large group of city police who had been rounded up in 2010 and sent to a Veracruz prison, only to be later released for lack of evidence. Update, Aug. 11: Authorities say he allegedly worked for reputed organized crime leader Alfredo "El Aquiles" Arzate Arteaga. Officials said Jesús Mariano Salas Sicarios, a former policeman also sent to Veracruz in 2010, escaped this week's police dragnet. Story, Frontera (PDF).

5 youths killed in Monterrey suburb

Five youths between the ages of 17 and 22 were shot to death on a street in Escobedo, Nuevo León around 4 a.m. Sunday. It was unclear why they were shot by masked men who were traveling in three trucks. Story, El Mexicano (PDF).

Last month, two Tijuana men allegedly killed two other men they found sleeping with their girlfriends

Juan Alfredo "El Reo" Díaz García and Julio César "El Happy" Sánchez Ávalos are in Tijuana's La Mesa prison on murder charges after they allegedly killed two other man they found sleeping with their girlfriends July 28, El Mexicano reported. The two men used .38-caliber and .223 caliber guns to kill the men when they found their girlfriends with them in the home of Jesús Melecio Guerrero in the Salvatierra neighborhood. Police afterward found marijuana, meth, heroin. rifles and a digital scale in the home where the shootings took place. When the shootings took place, the two children of Sánchez Avalos's girlfriend were in the home, El Mexicano reported. Story, El Mexicano (PDF).

Insecurity Barometer records zero violent deaths for Tijuana during previous week

Frontera's Insecurity Barometer for Tijuana had zero violent deaths for the week ending Aug. 5. It also reported 45 vehicle thefts and 27 cases of drug possession.
