Bob FilnerJay Leno makes border-crosser joke involving San Diego Mayor Bob Filner and the sexual harassment allegations against the former congressman

National comedians have been having a field day with the sexual harassment allegations against San Diego Mayor Bob Filner, and on Tuesday, Jay Leno introduced illegal border crossers into the mix on NBC's "The Tonight Show":

"Well, some sad news, a man called Garry Davis, he was a leader of the One World movement dedicated to erasing all national borders, has passed away at the age of 91. He wanted to do away with all borders between countries. His campaign was mostly unsuccessful, except of course, in the area between the United States and Mexico (audience laughs). Other than that, it wasn't very successful.

"Actually, listen to this, listen to this, illegal border crossings in California (are) way down this summer, especially in San Diego, because people are afraid they might get groped by the mayor if they come across." (audience laughs)

Leno has made a large number of jokes about Filner, but this one really has to hurt because of the efforts Filner has put into improving cross-border ties.

Leno also talked about how Filner is going to a two-week therapy program in August. "They say it's a 12-step program. Here's a simple 12-step program: Just stay 12 steps away from all women."

He also joked about how Filner wanted the city to defend him. "I guess he figured he already tried to screw his co-workers, might as well screw the taxpayer, too."

Leno also also talked about how California Democratic Sen. Diane Feinstein had told CNN's Candy Crowley that Filner should resign, and then Leno "inserted" Filner onto the CNN set in a video clip, having the former Democratic congressman massaging Feinstein's shoulders until she elbows him away.

Leno then segued into Anthony Weiner jokes, just as he had done on Monday night after starting off with Filner jokes.

bob filner nbc phtoOn Wednesday night, Leno started with Weiner, and then moved on to Filner. He said Hawaii is now offering homeless people a one-way ticket to get them off the island, and asked, "Why can't we offer this same deal to the mayor of San Diego?" Leno then went into how an eighth woman has publicly come forward with sexual harassment allegations against the mayor, and showed a photo of Filner grinning (right) at a media conference last week. Leno asked, "Isn't every sexual advance unwanted from that guy?"

On a more serious note, it appears that Filner may be able to dig in because of flaws in San Diego's recall law. On Monday, his lawyer said the city may be at fault because he was not given sexual harassment training. A city official, however, said the mayor's office had canceled numerous training sessions, which would entail sexual harassment training.

On Wednesday, former Mayor Jerry Sanders said it was time for Filner to resign, because the city's work is not getting done and because of the ridicule Filner has brought upon San Diego. Story, U-T San Diego.

Update, Aug. 3, 2013: Filner also winds up being the butt of Leno jokes on Thursday and Friday, meaning he was featured in Leno's monologue every day this week. Leno noted Friday that a ninth woman has come forward with allegations, helping cause lawyer Gloria Allred to be suffering from exhaustion. Leno has been referring to Filner as America's "creepiest mayor."

Update, Aug. 5, 2013: CNN's show that analyzes how the U.S. news media covers stories, "Reliable Sources," devotes a large amount of time Sunday to the Weiner case, but none to Filner.

Update, Aug. 6-8, 2013: Leno barrage continues: Leno let Filner have it with four jokes on Monday, Aug. 5 show, but cut short his monologue on Tuesday, Aug. 6, having no mention of Filner, to leave more time to interview President Barack Obama, who later visited Camp Pendleton on Wednesday. But Leno made up for that on Wednesday, Aug. 7, with two Filner jokes and a segment about the new (fictitious) horror movie, "The Mayor," using the above photo of the grinning Filner, but with his eyes gleaming red.
Monday's lead joke: "We're excited because President Obama will be on the show tomorrow night, sitting right there. So if you're coming to the show tomorrow night, security will be very, very tight. You'll be patted down more than an intern at the San Diego mayor's office."
Also Monday, the fake newspaper Leno uses to introduce his humorous Headlines segment has as its headline: "Filner in Rehab: Anthony Weiner Still on the Loose." (Filner began a two-week intensive therapy program on Monday.)
Wednesday: After a Weiner joke, Leno said, "Well, shark researchers in Florida report the number of shark attacks on humans are on the rise. What they do is they spot their victim ... they circle once, then they grab the first part of you they can." Leno then paused, made a pained expression and said, "I'm sorry, that's the mayor of San Diego. I'm sorry, that's that Bob Filner guy. I had that confused with the mayor."
Leno continued: "Two more women have come forward to accuse San Diego Mayor Bob Filner of sexual misconduct — brings the total now to 13, 13 women! Or, as Filner calls that, a groper's dozen."
Leno then segued into a Weiner joke.

Leno's border-crosser-Filner joke was a kind of reversal of Leno's joke about Arnold Schwarzenegger and border crossers.
