Ensenada will be getting a new bishop in July, El Mexicano reported. Rafael Valdez Torres, 53, will come from the Zamora diocesis in Michoacán state, where he has been rector of the Shrine of Our Lord of the Miracles in San Juan Nuevo since 2004. Pope Francis selected Valdez Torres to succeed Ensenada's first bishop, Sigifredo Noriega Barcel, who now is bishop of Zacatecas. The post has been open for nine months, the paper said.
Valdez Torres was born Nov. 4, 1959, in Santiago Tangamandapio, Michoacán, the third of seven children, and began studies in the Seminario Menor in 1971. He continued his studies 1977 at Zamora diocesis's Seminario Mayor and was ordained on Feb. 9, 1985, in Zamora's cathedral. He also studied at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome, and has served as a professor in philosophy at Mexican seminaries in addition to serving as a parish priest.
Update, Aug 1: Valdez Torres arrives in Ensenada.
